Oral Thrush Can Be a Sign of Something More Dangerous
Oral Thrush is Yeast Infection of the Mouth
Oral thrush is the name given to yeast infection of the mouth and
throat. All yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of Candida albicans bacteria. This may cause localised
infections; for example in the mouth or genitals area or the infection can be systemic in which case it can affect
various parts of the body including the organs. Yeast infection of the mouth can develop in babies as a result of
transfer of the infection from the mother. Follow this link if you want more background on Candida

What is Yeast Infection?
Candida albicans bacteria are just one of a large number of different bacteria
that are normally found in the human body. In a normal healthy person these bacteria all serve a useful purpose and
are held in natural equilibrium. Under various circumstances our natural equilibrium can be disrupted and this is
when the Candida might be able to multiply and cause localised or systemic yeast infections including oral thrush.

Causes of Yeast Infection
More on Oral Thrush and it’s Symptoms
Yeast infection of the mouth can develop quite suddenly and without much
warning and, like all types of yeast infection, can be very persistent if not treated quickly and comprehensively.
It usually begins with a sore, burning sensation in the mouth and throat and can then form a cluster of painful white lesions which look rather like cottage cheese on the inside of
the mouth. This typically forms on the cheeks, palates, tongue and perhaps on
the roof of the mouth, on the gums or the back of the throat. Cracks can form
underneath this coating that can sometimes bleed.
Children who suddenly lose their appetites for no apparent reason could be victims
of oral thrush.
There can be a sharp burring feeling in the mouth and throat which will make
eating, swallowing and brushing of the teeth very difficult and painful and it can feel as if something is
continually stuck in the throat. Bad breath – with a yeasty smell is another likely symptom.
If it is not dealt with quickly, the infection can spread down the throat to the
oesophagus and potentially, in extreme cases, to the lungs. Doctors use throat
cultures, endoscopic examination and barium swallow to help establish if an oral thrush infection that has
progressed this far.
Why We Should Start Treatment ASAP
Treatment for oral thrush is normally through pastilles and lozenges or liquid
suspensions. The disadvantage of these methods is that while they will attack the symptoms they are not usually
able to deal with the root cause.
As is the case with all yeast infections, if you have recurring oral thrush you
need to consider a comprehensive treatment that will deal with the root cause – the imbalance of Candida albicans
bacteria.
The key message here is that if you have the symptoms of oral thrush, and
particularly if the symptoms keep coming back it is very possible, in fact very likely, that you may have started
to develop Candida overgrowth in your gastrointestinal tract.
In this situation a comprehensive program of treatment is advisable and should be
started straight away so as to prevent the possibility of the infection turning systemic and causing infections in
various other parts of the body.
How to Treat All Types of Yeast
Infection
The general advice on treatment is the same for all types of yeast infection, including oral
thrush. There are various over-the-counter treatments available to get relief from the symptoms. It is very
important, however that action is taken to restore the correct internal balance so that the condition
does
not return or worse become systemic.
